In addition to sharing accommodations (hotels, airbnb, vrbo, etc.) with other conference attendees, one potential option may be the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Housing List. If you subscribe to this list, you’ll see that many students, postdocs, and visiting scientists are often looking for interested parties to rent their apartments/rooms while they are away at conferences, fieldwork, vacation, etc. Here is the link to sign up for that list: https://siomail.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/sio-housing.
Although there are not many low-priced hotels in La Jolla, there’s an area of San Diego called Hotel Circle that has numerous hotel options. It is ~11 miles away from SIO and there is a public transit option. You would use the San Diego Trolley (several stops along Hotel Circle), take that to UC San Diego (UCSD), and then the SIO shuttle (free) would drive you to the conference. Using the attached map (from this website), you would take the Green Line from one of several stations (Mission Valley, Hazard Center, or Fashion Valley) to the Old Town station where you would take the Blue Line to UC San Diego Central Campus, then you’d get on the SIO shuttle which drops you off in front of the conference auditorium. If you choose a hotel that isn’t right by one of the Trolley stations, you could take a city bus to the nearest station. Here’s a website that can help you plan your route. If you have a smartphone with access to Maps or Google maps, search for public transport routes from your accommodation to Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Maps and Google Maps will give several options, use the one that accommodates you the best. These apps do not show the UCSD/SIO shuttles. To learn more about the UCSD/SIO shuttles you can look at this live map or look directly at the SIO map.
There are likely other options for housing, such as hostels.
Remember that public transportation in San Diego costs $2.50 per person per ride. If you are taking the trolley, there are several machines at each station that provide a self-service option for purchasing tickets. If you are taking a bus you can pay when entering the bus, but you must have exact change because the buses only accept cash in USD and do not provide change. You can also download the PRONTO app and create an account to buy and have your tickets (Bus or Trolley) on your phone.
Route from Inn by the Sea Hotel
If you are staying at the Inn by the Sea at La Jolla, walk to Silverado St & Herschel Av (3 min walk) and look for the 30 bus stop. Make sure you are taking the 30 towards UTC. The bus should take around 20 minutes to get to the stop where you will get off the bus: La Jolla Shores Dr & Camino del Collado (indicated by the big red arrow on the map above). Once there, you are going to walk (5 min) to Scripps Institution of Oceanography Seaside Forum. A wooden building with an ocean view below Caroline’s Cafe.
Route from Hotel La Jolla

If you want to take a bus, walk to La Jolla Shores Drive and Paseo Dorado, look for the 30 bus stop. Make sure you are taking the 30 towards UTC. If your bus is going towards Old Town you are going in the wrong direction. The bus should take around 10 minutes to get to the stop where you will get off the bus: La Jolla Shores Dr & Camino del Collado (indicated by the big red arrow on the map above). Driving with your own car
Please feel free to use your own or rented vehicle. However, take into consideration the following:
- There will be morning traffic. Typical traffic from Mission Valley (Hotel Circle area) to La Jolla on a weekday morning yields ~20-30 minute commute.
- There will only be 10 parking permits available per day to access the Scripps parking lots. Each permit will cost $8.00 per day and are given on a first come, first serve basis.
- Parking is challenging as we have very limited parking at Scripps. If the permits are sold out, you’ll have to look for street parking which is definitely doable, especially early in the morning, but you’ll need to factor in an additional 10-15 minutes to walk from your parking spot. Most students, postdocs, staff, and faculty park on the street because campus parking is extremely limited and expensive. Take into consideration that San Diego City street sweeping happens on Thursdays, so parking is much more limited on those days.
- La Jolla, San Diego is a hot spot during summer for families, surfers, etc., so parking near the conference will be challenging. Some good streets to look for parking are La Jolla Shores Drive, Paseo del Ocaso, Calle Corta, Calle de Oro, or La Jolla Shores Beach free parking lot. Wherever you park, please make sure to read the posted street parking signs. Areas that are 2 hours only, 1 hour only, and street sweeping on Thursdays should be avoided because you will get an expensive parking violation ticket.
If after reading this information you still have questions about transportation to/from the conference, email us at larvalfishconference@gmail.com.
